The new collection of Royal Oak watches and chronographs glows with the solar energy of yellow gold, the universal emblem of beauty, energy and light. Not only has gold always symbolised wealth and power, it has also been its source.
Launched in 1972, the Royal Oak was the first luxury watch to break with the gold standard in favour of stainless steel. That seismic shift, from precious gold to a more common alloy, expressed a new form of alchemy, and radically anticipated how active and dynamic contemporary lifestyles were about to become. Using steel in such a manner was a risk, yet ultimately a game-changing triumph.
Today, Audemars Piguet forges its own path and defies convention once more by bringing luxury watchmaking’s most elemental material back to the surface, pushing tradition towards new sources of creativity.
ROYAL OAK PERPETUAL CALENDAR
The Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar combines yellow gold with the most classic complication in all of watchmaking. Day, date, month, astronomical moon, with the week of the year displayed on the dial’s outer chapter ring and the essential leap year indication hold pride of place on the “Grande Tapisserie” decorated dial. The new lighter blue of the dial harmonises beautifully with the warm yellow of the gold case, hour-markers and luminescent hands. Housed in an assertively sized 41 mm yellow gold case, the selfwinding watch’s new larger calibre 5134 is fully visible through the glareproofed sapphire crystal caseback.
