The Oris new release that will go down in history
Maison Oris has just launched a new version of its emblematic watch Big Crown Pointer Date. This vintage-style edition features an in-house movement of latest generation and of remarkable performance.
This is one good surprise by Oris for the end of the year. The brand unveiled a new Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 403, just before Christmas. True to the original model of 1938, this watch differ from other references thanks to its smooth, and not fluted, bezel.
The case size has also been reduced to 38mm diameter (40mm on the other models). Which is a good idea because it gives the timepiece a more timeless look. It still features (of course) an oversized crown. That was a specificity of the original watch so it could be operated by gloved airmen.
There is still the famous “Pointer Date” hand with a red-pointed end that indicates the date. However, the designers have made some improvements on the dial.
The brand has decided to remove the “cathedral” styled hands, and to put smooth ones. They have also thickened and redesigned the numbers. These aesthetical changes were inspired by the smooth bezel.
Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 403, vintage style for a modern movement
After the dial, it is time now to talk about the heart of the watch. Oris has equipped this Big Crown Pointer Date of a high-performance automatic movement. This novelty originates from the latest generation in-house Calibres 400 series.
This Calibre 403, equipped with a date hand and small seconds at 6 o’clock (which differs from the Calibre 400), is very resistant against magnetic fields and has a power reserve of five days. Visible on the case back, this calibre displays a chronometric accuracy of -3/+5 seconds per day (Oris test). It is even better than the Swiss Official Chronometer Control System (COSC) accuracy, which is -4 and +6 seconds/day.
But wait, there’s more! Indeed, Oris is offering a 10-year warranty on this watch (you can register on MyOris). It also recommends a 10-year service interval and a water resistance control every five years. Which is rare in the watchmaking world.
Last but not least, we still have to talk about the price of the new Big Crown Pointer Date Calibre 403. We have to admit that Oris has managed to surprise us again: only € 2,900 for this high-performance instrument.
