RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph: the grand finale

All the watch manufacturers are interested in producing instruments designed for exploring the ocean depths. The watchmaking maison Richard Mille is no exception and, in 2011, introduced its first collection of diving watches: the RM 032. Adopted by Arnaud Jerald, professional free diver, holder of eight world records and friend of the brand, the instrument of many superlatives is now available in a version made of grade 5 titanium and TPT® Carbon: the RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition. This latest model, the final creation of this collection, marks the end of an iconic series.

The RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition: a watch for wealthy divers and lovers of unusual watches

A super diver’s watch with a diameter of 50 mm and water resistance to 300 metres. This resistance to pressure – found at great depths – is the result of a unique three-part case construction. Firstly, it is fitted with a fixed bezel, machined from grade 5 titanium with a light satin finish and polished chamfers.

The RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition is the latest model in the RM 032 collection.

It is complemented by a unidirectional rotating bezel in sand-blasted grade 5 DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) titanium, embellished with half-lunettes in TPT® Carbon. To ensure optimum stability and adjustment, the entire assembly is secured by 22 star screws. Designed to meet the demands of extreme sports and the exhilaration of the deep, the watch features a locking crown patented by Richard Mille. Regrettably, however, there is no luminescent material on the triangle of the rotating bezel, which is normally required to comply with the ISO 6425 standard for diving watches.

The crown and pushers are locked simply by turning their ring: green indicator if unlocked, red if locked.

The crown and the pushers are secured by a simple rotation of the ring. They are unlocked when the indicator turns green and locked when it is red. It should be noted that these elements, which are essential to protect the movement against possible shocks, required ten days of machining, multiple water-resistance tests and various checks. In keeping with the technical expertise of Richard Mille instruments, the RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition features ergonomic lines that make it undeniably comfortable on the wrist.

The rotating bezel is machined in grade 5 titanium with a bead-blasted DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) treatment and complements the half-bezels in TPT® Carbon.

A high-class automatic movement

Combining high-tech materials that reflect the Manufacture’s expertise in the manufacture of avant-garde materials, this edition comes with two rubber straps: one black, the other yellow for a resolutely sportier style.

The RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition is also available on a yellow rubber strap for a sportier look.

The timepiece is driven by the RMAC2 calibre, a self-winding movement equipped with a flyback function that allows a new timekeeping operation to be stopped, reset to zero and immediately restarted. This operation is performed using the push-button located at 4 o’clock on the case middle.

Visible on the back of the case, the self-winding movement features a variable-geometry rotor.

This masterpiece of technology features a running indicator at 3 o’clock, a chronograph second hand and a display of the first fifteen minutes printed on the sapphire crystal of the skeleton dial.

The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides.

All these features are covered with luminescent material to ensure optimum legibility in all circumstances. Offering a power reserve of around 50 hours thanks to two barrels, this beating heart is equipped with an annual calendar featuring a semi-instantaneous date display in an aperture at 12 o’clock and the month in a more discreet aperture at 4.30 o’clock.

The dial is protected by eight silicone flanges inserted into the upper and lower grooves.

The variable-geometry rotor, a major innovation

Based on a PVD-treated grade 5 titanium plate and bridges, the automatic calibre is equipped with a variable-geometry rotor, visible through a transparent case back. This ingenious device enables the owner to wind the movement according to his or her physical activity.

The RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition features a variable-geometry system which optimises the winding movement of the rotor.

To modify the rotor’s inertia, simply adjust the positioning of the white gold fins. In simple terms, this capacity for modularity makes it possible to speed up winding when wrist movements are slow, or to slow down the process during sports that require faster movements.

The many components of the RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition.

Like all Richard Mille models, the RM 032 Automatic Flyback Chronograph Ultimate Edition is limited to just 80 pieces worldwide. The lucky owners will benefit from an ultra-complex timepiece that in no way neglects comfort. Nonetheless, wearing it every day is a matter that requires some thought…
