AUCTION RECORD IN FRANCE FOR A ROLEX WATCH
Monte-Carlo – The sale of Collectors’ Timepieces organised in Monaco attracted collectors and enthusiasts from around the world and established two new records : the auction record in France for a Rolex watch, and the world record for a Daytona Paul Newman Panda Tropical at 336 600 € / 453 333 $ (lot 313).
The sale realised 2 014 050 € / 2 712 427 $, including commission, an increase of 38% on the 2013 sale. This summer auction event attracts more and more buyers each year : this year 17% of buyers registered for the first time.
« The results achieved this evening for Rolex models reflect the changing tastes of international watch collectors. Having been dominated by Patek Philippe, the market appears to be moving towards vintage Rolex watches that are particularly sought after today. » explained Marie Sanna and Romain Réa, from the Watches Department.
This Rolex Daytona “Paul Newman” series, with a black and white face, was labelled « Panda » by collectors early on, for its design resembling the face and colouring of the well-loved animal. This unique piece was given the name “Ultimate Coffee Panda” by our specialists to emphasise its rarity, due to the remarkable coffee colour of its « tropical face ». The watch, kept in the same family for many years, was in perfect condition. The previous owner had ensured that the watch was maintained by the same workshop for 17 years, with no less than 11 services carried out during this period.
The Daytona is undoubtedly the most famous Rolex model, immortalised by numerous stars, from Jean-Paul Belmondo and Eric Clapton to Paul Newman, who wore one in the film Winning, and gave the watch its name.
