DESCRIPTION

  • In the great tradition of artistic crafts…

A pioneer for more than 160 years, Cartier has always placed the artistic crafts at the very heart of its creations. For the last decade, this rich heritage has been particularly honoured by the watchmaking marvels in the Cartier Art collection. These unique watches preserve, revive and reinvent rare areas of expertise that are sometimes forgotten.

This year, six new creations testify to a desire to go even further, beyond the limits of an era that has passed, to project the nobility of the artistic crafts into today's world. Reinterpreting and adapting these crafts around stones, enamel, engraving and wood has given birth to a new epoch.

Loyal to its inherent sense of creative craftsmanship, Cartier proposes a magical menagerie that showcases this unusual union of artisanal skills and watchmaking expertise. These artistic crafts enrich and complement each other, providing new realms of creativity.

Whether at the Cartier Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds or in the extraordinary setting of private workshops, Cartier Art watches are brought to life in the hands of outstanding craftsmen. They are exceptional pieces imbued with a passion for craftsmanship, for limits surpassed and for challenges resolved; such perfection and beauty in workings so infinitely small are truly astounding.

Time no longer matters; the hands work on, producing intaglio engravings, gold cloisonné creations, stone mosaics, overlays of enamel, wood marquetry, and so on, like a poem reeled off by the tips of fingers.

Emotion is most certainly in the air.

Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm watch, bear motif in plique-à-jour paillonné enamel

Enamelling originated around the Mediterranean and has decorated jewellery, gold and silverware since antiquity. The earliest examples of plique-à-jour enamelling techniques date back to the 14th century, when émaux de plique – a complex variety of cloisonné enamelling on gold with a translucent base – was particularly fashionable at the French royal court. It was not until the Art Nouveau period that many examples of jewellery known as “émaux translucides à jour” were produced, incorporating enamel without any backing.

At the start of the 20th century, Cartier showcased this unique area of expertise most notably on the “Deux Feuilles de Lierre” brooch in 1902 and on the Roman numerals of an easel table clock in 1929.

This year, Cartier revives this special artistic technique to produce a dial in plique-à-jour paillonné enamel. The work evokes the poetry of confidential craftsmanship, drawing on patience and research, expertise and secrets, trials and successes. Like a stained-glass window, the dial in plique-à-jour enamel comes to life. The translucent enamel plays with the light, suspended between fragile borders that are as delicate and elegant as a pencil line.

Without ever yielding to the temptation of easier options, the artisan enameller makes the light vibrate with subtle gradations of colour in his quest for excellence. In the absence of sudden contrasts or interruptions, the gaze is drawn from one enamel cell to the next and to each individual cloud, captivated by the brightening sky that sparkles with tiny flashes of silver placed one by one as stars. It continues by exploring the back of the polar bear and lingers on its head, before dropping down to the ice itself. There, too, the colour gradations and their orientation create relief and bring depth to the image, enhanced by a delicate chiaroscuro effect.

Right up to the last moment, the craftsman must guard against errors that could spoil the delicate balance of his piece: one layer too thick, one firing too long or one application too brusque… The entire piece of art depends on the virtuosity of the craftsman.
