DESCRIPTION

  • Shapes and movements by Cartier, a creator of fine watchmaking marvels

2009 represents a real quantum leap for Cartier. For the very first time, Cartier is developing its own watch movements that reflect the brand’s intense and ambitious research into mechanisms. This remarkable foray into the world of calibres is the signature of a new approach to fine watchmaking by Cartier, which was inaugurated last year with the Ballon bleu de Cartier Flying Tourbillon timepiece. Cartier has developed an array of shapes to convey this dynamic impetus, expressed in both the cases of their watches and the movements themselves. Featuring striking silhouettes, inventive graphic designs, spectacular volumes and Cartier-made movements, some bearing the prestigious Geneva Seal, this collection of ten timepieces elevates
great Cartier classics – from the Tank Américaine to the Santos 100 – to the rank of authentic examples of fine watchmaking.

The Santos 100 skeleton watch, a mythical, 100 percent Cartier timepiece featuring the 9611 MC calibre

An iconic Cartier model, the Santos watch established a veritable new lifestyle in 1904. 100 years later, it took on new and momentous proportions for the launch of the Santos 100 watch. Cartier has crafted an oversized case and accentuated the wonder surrounding its creations with this graphically striking version, equipped with the 9611 MC skeleton movement manufactured entirely by Cartier.

A movement in the form of Roman numerals

With its total transparency, this unrivalled Cartier creation reveals more than it conceals and is the subject of a registered patent. This mechanical movement with manual winding was designed and developed by Cartier to relieve the dial of its traditional task of indicating the time. This is thus not simply an existing movement that has been skeletonised, but rather an innovative, shaped movement that has been entirely designed to include bridges shaped as large Roman numerals and to use all of the space provided by the large palladium case. Equipped with two barrels, the 9611 MC calibre can store sufficient energy for 72 hours of timekeeping, thus guaranteeing the long-term consistency of the mainspring and, in consequence,
exceptional precision. Visible through two sapphire crystals, the 138 painstakingly hand-made components bear witness to the excellent craftsmanship of this exclusive movement: the bridge and main plate are bevelled, the sides satin-brushed, the dial elongated and the wheels circular-grained.
