DESCRIPTION

  • NEWPORT SLIM SKELETON

An anniversary watch to mark 75 years of HERBELIN

In 2022, French watchmaker HERBELIN celebrates   75   years   of   heritage and passion. As well as taking the opportunity to announce its new identity

    – Michel Herbelin becomes HERBELIN – the brand has produced an anniversary watch issued in a numbered limited series of 500 pieces: the Newport Slim Skeleton. With its simple, elegant design, the new timepiece reveals the heart of its hand-wound mechanical movement with modern flair. This is a traditional timepiece interpreted in a contemporary key, echoing the spirit of the world’s first HERBELIN flagship store that recently opened in Paris’ Saint-Germain-des- Prés district.

    A RETRO-INSPIRED, MINIMALIST DESIGN

Iconic from the moment it was launched in 1988, the Newport catapulted HERBELIN to international attention. Inspired by the original model, the Newport Slim collection was completely reworked while retaining the essence of its nautical heritage, such as the central lugs and crown engraved with a ship’s wheel. Launched in 2021 to popular acclaim, it features a distinctive urban silhouette with a minimalist design. But the Newport Slim Skeleton goes further still, taking this stylistic exercise to the extreme.

The bezel, which had already lost its traditional screws, remains wide, but the Newport inscription has moved to the caseback. The traditional flange has also been removed in favour of a ring, punctuated with simple rounded perforations that serve as hour markers. Emblazoned with the new HERBELIN logo printed under the sapphire crystal for greater transparency, the ensemble is illuminated by the reflections of the polished finish of the stainless steel case. The latter is cut into three facets and presents a 42 mm diameter and a thickness of just 7.15 mm.

To complete the sleek character of this anniversary timepiece, the alligator-style leather strap has been coated with a layer of rubber to make it soft and matt. In black with grey overstitching, it matches the dial that offers a captivating view of the movement.

    A MECHANICAL BALLET

The entirely exposed manual-wound mechanical movement is pared back to the max. Given a modern, understated look by rhodium plating, its skeletonisation was specially designed for the French brand. Adopting the stylised shape of a ship’s wheel, an   unmistakeable   signature   of the Newport collection, it showcases the complex orchestration of components and gears, transforming the mechanism into a mesmerising spectacle for those who love to peek behind the scenes.

Beating to the rhythm of its faceted and tapered black oxydised hands, the Sellita Swiss-made calibre is also visible through the transparent caseback. Incorporating 19 jewels and oscillating at 28,800 beats per hour, it features a 45-hour power reserve.

A LIMITED EDITION MADE IN FRANCE

Engraved on the back of the case with the number X/500, the Newport Slim Skeleton cultivates its difference through its contemporary architecture. This French- made timepiece is designed, assembled, adjusted and inspected at the HERBELIN workshops in the Jura mountains of the Franche-Comté region.

Embracing the traditional French watchmaking expertise passed down from father to son since 1947, this limited-edition anniversary watch pays fitting tribute to 75 years of HERBELIN. The French brand is beginning a new chapter, looking ambitiously to the future while staying true to its origins, a true mark of quality and watchmaking expertise.

    About HERBELIN . . .

In the last century, Michel Herbelin founded his eponymous brand as an independent family-owned tra- ditional French watchmaking com- pany in Charquemont, in the region of Haut-Doubs near the Swiss bor- der. Set in the heart of the manu- facturing region of Fine Watchma- king – close to its main suppliers to ensure absolute control over pro- duction – the company has its own design studio within the workshops where watches are assembled. Beautifully made, in a price range from €300 to €3,000, they are exclu- sively equipped with Swiss move- ments. In 2021, annual production reached 85,000 watches, with distri- bution through 3,000 points of sale across 50 countries.

Heir to a watchmaking tradition stretching back over 75 years, this Jura brand is spurred on by the passion of a family that has seen three generations take up the craft since 1947. Since 2020 the com- pany has been managed by four young people: the founder’s grand- sons Maxime and Mathieu Herbe- lin and two close members of the “Herbelin family”, Cédric Gomez- Montiel and Benjamin Theurillat.

To mark its 75th anniversary in 2022, the brand is showcasing a new identity that carries with it a de- sire to promote French elegance, refinement and watchmaking ex- pertise more than ever before. An ambition with a single name: HERBELIN. The same year, the brand is opening the world’s first HERBELIN flagship store at 58, Rue Bonaparte in Paris’ Saint-Germain- des-Prés district.
