And more, that on 1 June each year, we release a 250-piece limited edition watch called the H\u00f6lstein Edition, named after the beautiful village in the Swiss Jura mountains that we\u2019ve called home for 119 years.<\/p>\n<p>This year, we\u2019re delighted to continue the tradition with the release of the H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023, which for the first time introduces our best-selling line, the Aquis diver\u2019s watch, into this ultra-special family of designs. As before, only 250 pieces will be made, and sold on a first- come basis. Everyone\u2019s invited.<\/p>\n<p>While there\u2019s no doubting the character of the watch \u2013 and we\u2019ll explore the colourways and the \u201cno date\u201d Aquis story over the page \u2013 what\u2019s more fundamental is the spirit behind it.<\/p>\n<p>On that founding date in 1904, a set of values was established that continues to motivate how Oris thinks and operates. Our founders wanted to create high-quality watches for the citoyen of the day. In other words, to make beautiful, high- functioning, highly reliable pieces that weren\u2019t decorated beyond their core purpose to a point that made them inaccessible and exclusive. Now, we talk about making watches \u201cfor today\u2019s world citizen\u201d. The thinking behind this and our current collection is the same as 119 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Not that everything\u2019s the same as back then, of course. Today, no one needs a mechanical watch. At least, not to tell the time. But what we do need is joy. It\u2019s part of the human condition that we can feel and express joy, and high-quality Swiss Made mechanical watches have become a vehicle for that emotion. They make us smile. This is the brief behind an Oris watch. And it\u2019s one we feel proud and fortunate to fulfil.<\/p>\n<p>Those same values are at the heart of the new H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023. It\u2019s a beautiful, high- functioning watch created for today\u2019s world citizen, and that\u2019s also made to celebrate the joy of mechanics and put a smile on people\u2019s faces. Just wait till you see the case back...<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another way of thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Introducing the H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023, the first\u00a0no-date Aquis and the first with a purple dial<\/p>\n<p>Behind the freedom we have to express our values is a vital attribute: independence. Oris was founded to be independent, and it remains independent today. It\u2019s this characteristic that means we can go our own way and produce watches our customers want and love.<\/p>\n<p>The H\u00f6lstein Edition series is in some way the ultimate expression of our independence. Each of the previous three editions has been a bit \u201coff the wall\u201d, the sort of watch that brings out the most playful, independent side of our character, and that we create for passionate Oris fans who \u201cget it\u201d. These watches are for our community.<\/p>\n<p>This year, our fourth H\u00f6lstein Edition continues this story. It\u2019s the first based on the evergreen Aquis diver\u2019s watch. And it has a few twists.<\/p>\n<p>First is the dial colour: deep purple. The Oris community has been asking when we\u2019d do a purple dial, and this is the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Next is in the movement. The watch is powered by Calibre 400, our game-changing five-day automatic. As before, this delivers elevated anti- magnetism, better than chronometer accuracy (-3\/+5 seconds a day) and the promise of 10- year service intervals and a 10-year warranty. But there\u2019s one key difference: no date. This is the first ever \u201cno-date\u201d Aquis, a response to another request fielded from the Oris community.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the case back. It\u2019s engraved with the limited-edition number and printed with an illustration of the Oris Bear, diving in his scuba gear (see page 12). Why? Because why not. It\u2019s fun and it made us smile. And to be literal for a moment, because it shows this is still a diver\u2019s watch water-resistant to 30 bar (300 metres).<\/p>\n<p>Each of the 250 pieces tells our story in a unique way, and for one time only. It\u2019s a watch for independent thinkers, a gift for Oris fans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lighter touch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A purple dial and a scuba- diving bear. This watch\u00a0is about having fun, says Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer<\/p>\n<p>Rolf, this is the fourth H\u00f6lstein Edition. Tell us why you make these characterful watches... It started a few years back when we were thinking about how we could make special watches for our boutique customers, but in such a way that the watches felt inclusive. There\u2019s something exclusive about the term \u201cboutique edition\u201d that we didn\u2019t like. It\u2019s not who we are. So we came up with this idea of creating a short- run edition, a watch that we wouldn\u2019t otherwise have made and releasing it on 1 June, which is the anniversary of our founding date.<\/p>\n<p>Would you say the idea has been a success? Yes, absolutely. Clearly, the H\u00f6lstein Editions aren\u2019t conventionally commercial. They\u2019re more conceptual, left-field pieces that Oris fans and collectors are likely to be interested in. These watches are for everyone, but experience tells\u00a0us they\u2019re more likely to be enjoyed by people who really love Oris, who know and appreciate our story and who are inspired by our values. Honestly, in a business sense, these watches don\u2019t move the needle. But that\u2019s fine. We only make 250 of them and in a way, they\u2019re our gift to our fans. These watches won\u2019t be repeated.<\/p>\n<p>You say conceptual: this year\u2019s H\u00f6lstein Edition is a steel Aquis, a familiar, simple design and not really a concept. Is that fair? Yes, that\u2019s fair \u2013 and very deliberate! The first three H\u00f6lstein Editions were all quite high- concept, especially last year\u2019s which was based on the Full Steel of the late 1990s. That was a passion project for us because it recalled a special chapter in recent history, the last pre- connected decade, and one that has become fashionable again. By comparison, yes, the H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023 is a simpler execution of the idea, and places the focus more squarely on the passions and desires of the Oris community.<\/p>\n<p>How does this reflect the Oris community? We\u2019re fortunate to have a very active global community. You can see that from the interaction we get on social, and even more so from the thriving Oris Social Club network. We have more than 30 OSC chapters around the world now, each run by local Oris fans. They talk to us and tell us what they think of our watches and our collaborations. They also ask good questions. Why have we not done a no-date Aquis? When\u00a0are we going to do a purple-dialled watch? These inspired the H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023, which is what makes it a watch for our community.<\/p>\n<p>Concepts and one-off designs often point to things to come. Should we expect to see a non-limited no-date Aquis or purple dials in the core collection soon?<\/p>\n<p>The H\u00f6lstein Editions aren\u2019t meant to signal our future direction, although yes, our Calibre<\/p>\n<p>403 debuted in the 2021 edition. They\u2019re a celebration, created to bring joy, make people smile and give something back to the community that gives the Oris story so much oxygen. A no- date Aquis? Why not? But that\u2019s not how we think about these watches. We haven\u2019t released a core collection Full Steel, for example.<\/p>\n<p>So what should we take from it?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to overthink this, because we\u2019re trying to make products that are lighter than heavier. There\u2019s plenty that weighs today. A Swiss Made mechanical watch is a light, joyful thing. But I guess you could say the H\u00f6lstein Edition 2023 is a symbol of inclusive luxury. Inclusive luxury is about not creating negative emotions, such as envy, but about positive emotions, focusing on what we\u2019ve got and sharing good moments with others. I don\u2019t want to sound too serious. We take watchmaking seriously and we\u2019re proud to do great work that people love, but we wear it lightly. Have fun. Enjoy life. That\u2019s who we are.
