    Aquis Date

Introducing the new Aquis Date and Aquis Date Upcycle, a modern versatile collection of everyday toolwatches that delivers luxury performance and sophistication to today’s world citizens

The story of a modern everyday toolwatch

Meet the new Aquis Date, a joyful everyday toolwatch driven by the principles of contemporary refined luxury

At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024, it’s our pleasure to introduce you to the new Aquis Date, the next generation of our evergreen, everyday toolwatch. Our vision is to create beautiful watches that follow the principles of contemporary refined luxury and that therefore make sense to us and to today’s world citizen.

The new Aquis Date is a joyful expression of that vision, a modern versatile watch for people who value design, mechanics, sustainable manufacturing and the independent Swiss watchmaking spirit.

The Aquis is one of our signature designs and the new collection follows in the footsteps of generations of toolwatches designed to be stylish, reliable, robust and high-performing, even deep underwater. As before, this new generation will bring numerous performance benefits to the wrists of watch lovers all over the world, including the Oris-patented Quick Strap Change system and a new innovation, the Oris-patented quick adjust clasp system (see page 6), both of which appear on the flagship Aquis Date Calibre 400 43.50 mm five-day automatic models.

We’re also refreshing the Aquis Date Upcycle, the watch with a dial made of recycled PET plastic. The watch is another symbol of our Change for the Better programme of sustainability initiatives. No two Upcycle dials are the same.

The new Aquis also highlights our new radically sustainable packaging (see page 16), another step in the Oris Emissions Reduction Programme, an ambitious platform for change through which we’re targeting a significant reduction in our total global emissions. This year, we take another step towards our goals with this new modular packaging, which is crafted from low-weight, low-volume, recycled and fully recyclable cardboard and paper. External logistics are our largest source of carbon emissions, and we’re pleased to report that this innovation will help us reduce our packaging emissions by more than 50 per cent.

“Aquis is the cornerstone of our collection and a symbol of our joyfully sustainable approach to watchmaking,” said Oris Co- CEO Rolf Studer. “This new generation forms the next chapter in a great story that continues to make people smile.”

    The pursuit of detail

Every facet of the new Aquis collection has been refined to offer a richer expression of contemporary luxury

The new Aquis Date is an everyday toolwatch defined by the joyful, relentless pursuit of detail. Every facet has been reconsidered and upscaled to deliver a beautiful, desirable, high-performance watch that fuses numerous refinements in a perfect balance of form and function.

This begins with the case and the new Aquis Date’s visual profile and silhouette. The sculpted lugs and crown protection have been reworked, and the three- link metal bracelet has been skilfully redeveloped so that the central link is broader and the overall form more tapered. As a result, the new Aquis Date delivers exquisitely and reassuringly balanced aesthetics and ergonomics.

The watch’s uni-directional rotating bezel and hard-wearing ceramic bezel insert have also been subtly reproportioned, while the dial is decorated with new polished shield-shaped applied hour markers and bespoke, Alpha-style hands, as well as new proprietary typography that will only ever feature on Aquis models.

The refinement process continues under the dial: all new-generation Aquis watches will have a date wheel with a background colour to match the dial colour and high-contrast text, creating a seamless, pleasing relationship between the two while also protecting legibility.

There’s a bespoke 36.50 mm variant (see page 14), as well as 41.50 mm and 43.50 mm models, each in a variety of colours and powered by Calibre 733, a high- quality Swiss Made automatic.

The flagship is the Aquis Date Calibre 400 43.50 mm, featuring our in-house five- day, anti-magnetic automatic, the Oris- patented Quick Strap Change system and the new, innovative, Oris-patented quick adjust clasp system (see right).

Aquis is an inclusive watch that unites people in a divided world: it’s a watch for the citoyen

Oris Co-CEO Rolf Studer explains the thinking behind the new Aquis – and how we made a great watch even better

Rolf, give us a quick CEO’s perspective... Honestly, Oris is in great shape. Coming off the back of ‘Kermit Year’ and the global success of the ProPilot X Kermit Edition, we’ve got some really exciting momentum. More people now know what we stand for: we make joyful mechanical watches that make people smile and bring them together. Now we have to build on that with the new Aquis.

Let’s move to that: how does the new Aquis capture what Oris is about?

Aquis is our core family. Our best-seller. This is a watch that can do everything. And anyone can wear it. I don’t mean only certain people can wear our other lines, just that there’s an ease about Aquis that means it can transition across a wide spectrum of tastes and moments that’s harder for a more specific design such as ProPilot X or Big Crown. Aquis is an everyday toolwatch for the citoyen, the world citizen. It’s an inclusive watch that unites people in a divided world. It’s so important to have moments of joy that bring us together in community. Some might question: ‘You make luxury watches, what role can you play here?’ The answer is that everyone of us has a role to play. We’re doing our bit and using our influence to do the right things to bring Change for the Better. This is the citoyen’s view and it’s the philosophy that defines all of us at Oris.

If the spirit behind it is the same, what’s different about the watch itself?

Over time, Aquis has evolved from a functional diver’s watch into something closer to a piece of jewellery that can be worn in every moment of life. Every time we return to the design, the brief is to refine it. That means looking at every detail and making it better at everything it needs to do. So, yes, it still needs to be legible and robust, but it also needs to be elegant. To achieve that, we have to stress every detail in a way that isn’t common at our price point. Most of the changes are only really apparent when you put old and new together: you can tell it’s new, but you don’t immediately know why. This takes real skill. To change everything and yet preserve the design language and the integrity of the idea. The new Aquis shows how much we love watchmaking.

Sounds like it took a while...

Yes it did! The easy thing would have been to say: ‘This watch is good, why change it?’ But we wanted to take it to the next level and make a good watch even better. The new Aquis is more elegant and balanced than before, and most importantly, even more inclusive, thanks to the choice of options. Achieving that was hard, but it was absolutely worth it.

The Upcycle returns. What do buyers say about this model?

We always believed in the concept of a watch with a dial made of recycled plastic, but even we have been surprised by how well it’s been received. People choose it because it’s a badge showing they care about our planet. The fact it appears in every iteration of the new Aquis family signals how popular it is.

And what makes it so popular? Several things. No two are the same, so every buyer gets something unique. Added to that, people like the irony that individuality, something prized in luxury, is created by trash. There’s also the fact that Upcycle is a symbol of Change for the Better and a reminder that we need to work together to bring that change.

The 36.50 mm model has its own look, with a new bracelet. Why?

It’s our experience that many women want watches created for women, and a piece of jewellery. So we made the 36.50 mm to be more elegant, more upscale and more jewel-like. It’s that simple.

At the top end is a Calibre 400 model. Why offer buyers two movements?

One word: choice. If our customers want a technical watch with an in-house movement, they can have it with Calibre 400. But if they want a watch with a great Swiss Made automatic, but at a more accessible price, they can have Calibre 733, too. That’s what makes it inclusive.

People are looking for watches that make sense. This has been the Oris mantra for 120 years

Tell us about the new Oris packaging... This is a radical moment in the Oris Emissions   Reduction   Programme. The packaging is made of sustainable materials, can be fully recycled and packs flat to reduce cargo volumes. It will reduce emissions by more than 50 per cent compared to our previous packaging.

What’s the update on Oris’s annual 10 per cent emissions reduction pledge? It’s hard! But we’re taking steps all the time. The packaging is just one example of our progress. We’ll detail it all in our third Oris Sustainability Report, which we’ll publish in the summer.

What does this year hold for Oris and for Swiss watchmaking?

It’s clear people are thinking harder before they spend their money, which we see as a positive. They’re looking for real value and for products that make sense. This has been the Oris mantra for 120 years, so we’re confident.

Anything more on future Oris plans? Well, we’re going to continue making watches that make people smile and bring them together. But I can tell you we’re also working hard on the Oris Movement Creation Programme to bring more exciting complications to our family of in-house calibres. Just wait a little...

    Dialling up the change

The return of the Aquis Date Upcycle is a colourful symbol of our ambitious sustainability programme and our mission to bring Change for the Better

The next chapter in the Aquis Date story is also the next chapter in our Change for the Better programme. The new Aquis Date collection will include four models that carry the ‘Upcycle’ name, extending a capsule collection that is widely recognised for its unique feature: dials made of recycled PET plastic.

According to the WWF, 8 million tonnes of plastic are dumped in our oceans every year. There, it causes catastrophic damage to marine life. It’s understood that one in two turtles have eaten plastic mistaken for jellyfish, and that 90 per cent of sea birds have plastic in their stomach. Horrifying statistics.

A watch with a recycled plastic dial won’t reverse that on its own: but it can serve as a symbol of the need for change. And that’s the role of the Aquis Date Upcycle. The watch will remind wearers they did something good for the ocean, and to be mindful of their plastic consumption.

It’s also   a   symbol of our   Change for the Better programme, which includes an ambitious carbon reduction scheme, community projects and a growing schedule of partnerships with organisations that share our vision for change. All this is detailed in our annual sustainability report (see right).

The four Upcycle models follow the pattern of the Aquis collection: a flagship 43.50 mm piece with Calibre 400, and 43.50 mm, 41.50 mm and 36.50 mm versions powered by the Calibre 733 Swiss Made automatic. Each communicates the same important message: together we can bring Change for the Better.

    Small is beautiful

The new Aquis Date 36.50 mm has a glamorous new look, but it still fulfils the everyday toolwatch brief

One of the big stories from the new Aquis collection is the all-new 36.50 mm version of the watch, a bespoke design with a series of special touches that give it a more glamorous feel.

First is its softer profile, which is enhanced by a narrower uni-directional rotating bezel with a hard-wearing ceramic insert engraved with baton hour markers. These create a lighter, gentler visual impact than the Aquis Date’s standard Arabic numeral minutes scale.

The same effect is created by a polished finish to the case, bezel edge, crown and crown protection and by the watch’s new H-design bracelet, which has been conceived exclusively for the Aquis Date 36.50 mm. Each H-link is polished and

The new 36.50 mm’s bespoke design has a more glamorous feel

held in place by a brushed central link. These run into the watch’s sculpted, now polished lugs. The effect is to make the watch feel more elegant and glamorous, without losing its purpose as an everyday tool watch. To emphasise this, the bracelet and strap options are all fitted with the ergonomic new Oris-patented quick adjust clasp system (see page 6).

The watch will come in three colourways: in eternal black with a matching black ceramic bezel; with a crème mother- of-pearl dial that will be paired with a grey ceramic bezel; and a third Upcycle model with a recycled plastic PET dial. The date wheels are colour-matched to the dials for further refinement, while hour markers with diamond-shaped tips complete the look.

The Aquis Date 36.50 mm will be powered by Calibre 733, a high-quality Swiss Made automatic charged by the motion of Oris’s signature Red Rotor, visible through the watch’s case back.

    Packing light

The radical Oris Sustainable Watch Box marks the next big step in our ambitious Change for the Better campaign

Meet the new Oris Sustainable Watch Box. It’s made entirely from cardboard and paper, more than half of which is recycled, with the remainder coming from FSC-certified sources. It reduces our consumption of plastic-related materials by more than 1.5 tonnes annually compared to our previous packaging, equivalent to a weight reduction of 65 per cent. The box also has a foldable construction translating to a 54 per cent volume reduction compared to our previous packaging. It’s a game-changer.

And it’s necessary. Across the watch industry, packaging has one of the highest impacts on the environment of any of our activities. Watch boxes are often heavy and take up lots of space on an airplane and then a lot of space in homes all over the world, without ever really serving a useful function. Many people throw them away.

In every sense, what a waste.

When we were certified as a climate neutral company by ClimatePartner in 2021, we identified packaging as an area where we could make significant improvements to our sustainability profile. In our first Oris Sustainability Report of 2022, we pledged to reduce our total carbon emissions by 10 per cent a year for three years, and committed to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

A big step towards our target, we saw, could be achieved by rethinking our watch boxes, and by coming up with a clever, low-impact, modular design that could be easily flat-packed and assembled in order to reduce freight weight and volume, without compromising the safe and secure transportation of our watches or the customer experience, and while creating a positive knock-on effect on our carbon emissions. Easy...

But we’ve done it. The Oris Sustainable Watch Box will have one or two surprises, too. All designed to make people smile.
