    Tambour High End

Flying Colours: The Tambour shines in two exquisite new gem-set expressions

It is a rare and remarkable timepiece whose aesthetics, workmanship, and movement combine to set it apart from its peers — to render it, in a word, timeless.

The drum-shaped Tambour, released in 2002 and celebrated with an anniversary edition in 2022, is one such timepiece. When Louis Vuitton updated its iconic silhouette in 2023, it did so with the contemporary collector’s preferences in mind: slimmed down and given a matching, integrated bracelet, its stainless steel and precious-metal expressions made for a casual, unisex watch in line with modern tastes and appropriate for any wrist. Retaining the curved sides and signature, sandblasted bezel marked with the 12 letters LOUIS VUITTON, the modern take on the Tambour also provided a welcome infusion of a savoir-faire in the form of a beautifully finished movement designed by Louis Vuitton in conjunction with movement specialists Le Cercle des Horlogers.

Now, Louis Vuitton is expanding the collection with two high-end references that explore an important avenue within High Watchmaking — namely, the exquisite lapidary arts of gem-setting and stone cutting. A new yellow-gold Tambour with an onyx dial and saffron sapphires and a platinum Tambour with multicolored sapphires and rubies both tap into the horological zeitgeist, providing two distinct and eye-catching pieces that meld several savoir-faire: apha18K yellow gold and 950 platinum are finished to perfection to form sumptuous watch cases, while flashes of striking colour are celebrated via the curation and assembly of superb precious stones. Meanwhile, hard onyx makes its star debut in the Tambour collection as the dial of the new yellow-gold model.

Limited to 30 and 50 pieces due to the rarity of their noble materials and the time necessary to shape them, these two vibrant watches are proud, expressions of Louis Vuitton’s savoir faire.

Tambour Yellow Gold with Onyx Dial and Saffron Sapphires. The mystique of onyx meets the brilliance of sapphire

Joining two steel references and three existing references in yellow gold, rose gold, and two-tone steel and rose gold is an exclusive, limited-edition 40mm Tambour in solid 18K yellow gold with an onyx dial, a bezel set with saffron-coloured sapphires, and matching saffron sapphire indices. Its drum-shaped, circular-brushed case is beautifully contrasted by the brilliance of these baguette-cut precious stones, while an integrated bracelet with vertically-brushed and polished links and an invisible folding buckle ensure comforton the wrist. Fluid and elegant yet sporty and robust, the Tambour’s bona fides render it ideal for a glamorous lifestyle of travel and leisure.

This spectacular new reference marks the first time Louis Vuitton has used a hard stone within the Tambour line. Crafted from multiple pieces of Brazilian onyx — a variety of black agate — the dial appears as a seamless, reflective surface upon which are fixed saffron-coloured baguette-cut indices that beautifully meld with the case’s warm golden hue. Achieving such an elegant design is no mean feat: After a raw block of onyx is machine-drilled by skilled artisans, thin layers are achieved in a process that leaves little room for error — a single miscalculation, and the procedure must begin again.

These thin layers are then shaped into the dial’s individual components and adjusted as necessary in consideration of each stone’s special characteristics.

A precise and painstaking polishing stage then follows; after this, artisans drill the onyx to receive its hour indices, taking care all the time not to scratch it. All in all, the dial’s minute ring constitutes 12 onyx pieces; the dial center constitutes a separate piece; and the hour ring constitutes yet another. Upon assembly, the dial is then set with 11 baguette-cut saffron sapphires and carefully stamped with the double signature with white printing to avoid breaking the onyx. 18K yellow gold hands with hand-applied Super-LumiNova® and a black lacquer small-seconds counter at 6 o’clock make for a distinctly legible picture despite the deep, inky tone of the dial.

The rich saffron colour of the baguette-cut indices is no happy accident: Inspired by a Louis Vuitton “Vuittonite” trunk from 1911, this warm hue also extends to a further 48 baguette-cut stones set within the watch’s bezel that totalizes approximatively 2.22 carats. Accentuating the gold colour of the case, they shine with subtle brilliance, playing off the deep black of the dial and resulting in a dazzling aesthetic that commands attention.

Slim and elegant; accurate and precise; radiant and brilliant — the new Tambour Yellow Gold with Onyx Dial and Saffron Sapphires captures the essence of Louis Vuitton in wristwatch form, tapping into the zeitgeist to deliver a highly desirable and exclusive melding of the brand’s most precious savoir-faire. This limited edition is engraved “1 of 30” on each caseback, subtly reminding the wearer of its highly special nature.

Tambour Platinum with gradiated Sapphires and Rubies A riot of colour enveloped by robust precious metal

Platinum, a noble metal and one of the least reactive on the periodic table, is prized for its density, hardness, and brilliant silver-white lustre. When combined with the sparkle of a rainbow-coloured gradient of precious stones, the result is a spectacular timepiece — one that speaks to the current moment in watchmaking, yet transcends it. More than just a gradient-themed piece, its painstaking manufacturing process is the result of delicate craftsmanship and labour.

Like the yellow-gold Tambour with saffron sapphires and an onyx dial, the new platinum version — a first within the Tambour collection — features a round 40mm case measuring just 8.3mm thick. However, its case is significantly more difficult to machine, requiring 30% more time to produce than the gold version due to the density of the material.

Attaining its brushed finish is also incredibly time-consuming due to platinum’s natural resistance to abrasion, while the bezel, crown, chamfers, and interlinks take twice as long to polish as those on the gold Tambour.

The results, however, provide a spectacular canvas upon which to lay the pièce de résistance — a rainbow-coloured, fully gem-set bezel and indices.

In order to achieve a perfect gradient, Louis Vuitton sources 59 baguette-cut corundum gemstones totaling ~2.5 carats from Sri Lanka and Mozambique, including green, blue, violet, pink, fuchsia, orange, and yellow sapphires as well as rubies. Using only noble, sapphires and rubies from the corundum family brings even more rarity to the piece and gives the gradient a homogenous, fluid feel, with the only variable in the stones being their hue. Sourcing purple and green shades is particularly difficult, as is maintaining a smooth gradation between each colour in the Spectrum.

Offsetting the rainbow-hued bezel is a silvered opaline dial with a snailed small-seconds counter at 6 o’clock, 18K white gold hands with a hand-filled Super-LumiNova® luminescent coating, and 18K white gold indices. Beautifully matching the spectacular rainbow hue of the bezel, the indices are set with 11 color-gradated sapphires and rubies. Protected beneath a hardy sapphire crystal, this mesmerizing display of polychromatic beauty is finished with an integrated platinum bracelet boasting brushed and polished surfaces and an invisible three-blade folding buckle in 18K white gold.

Limited to just 50 pieces, this spectacular new expression of the Tambour collection has a small surprise present in order to indicate its special status: Flip the watch over, and its caseback is inset with a 1.6mm saffron sapphire. This small precious stone — which will serve as an indication of platinum used in a Louis Vuitton watch going forward — sits close to the wearer’s skin, reminding them of the exclusivity and special quality of the watch on their wrist.

Within both new limited-edition Tambour models beats the Calibre LFT023 from La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the manufacture established by master watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasinsi and wholly owned by Louis Vuitton since 2011. Designed in collaboration with the specialists at Le Cercle des Horlogers and visible via a sapphire caseback, this special calibre — the Maison’s first proprietary three-hand movement — is chronometer-certified by the Geneva Chronometric Conservatory to ISO 3159 standards and boasts accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day. Beyond its standout performance, it also features exceptional finishing according to Louis Vuitton design codes: A bi-directional, 22K rose gold micro-rotor is beautifully engraved with a stylized “LV” motif while its single barrel features the Maison’s Monogram flower; these contrast with circular graining on the mainplate and bead blasting and polishing on the bridges. 31 colourless sapphires mitigate friction while adding to the calibre’s contemporary look, while those in search of utility are well served by a 4-Hz beat rate and a 50-hour power reserve. Much more than just a simple power plant, the Calibre LFT023 is a dynamic representation of the Maison’s 170 years of savoir faire, designed with both technical proficiency as well as beauty in mind.

With their sophisticated movement, vibrant precious stones, meticulously crafted cases, and dials requiring exceptional craftmanship, the highly limited new Tambour Yellow Gold with Onyx Dial and Saffron Sapphires and Tambour Platinum with gradiated Sapphires and Rubies are poised to occupy pride of place in the collections of discerning connoisseurs around the world.
