DESCRIPTION

  • Antarctica

To continue the journey, Van Cleef & Arpels has chosen to write a supplementary chapter of the Jules Verne novel. The African adventure is complemented by a flight across Antarctica, with four additional watches.

The dial of the second watch shows seals, just out of the water, drying themselves in the rays of the winter sun. The water is depicted in translucent enamel. The base of the dial is gold which has been engraved before the enamel is applied in order to create the impression of movement.

    Extraordinary Dials

Each dial is constructed like a miniature masterpiece. Its production can take several months, with enamellers, engravers and stone cutters all contributing their expertise to enrich the work of the watchmakers.

The Stern Créations workshop, in Nyon on the shores of Lac Léman, is a virtuoso of enamel.

Its director, Dominique Baron, has preserved the secrets of this traditional technique. Silica powder, the basic ingredient of enamel, is still ground in agate mortars and the scenes are still painted with a sable hair brush, sometimes even with a needle.

In the heart of Geneva’s old town, the engravers of Olivier Vaucher’s workshop produce extraordinary work, notably in mother-of-pearl inlay. This white, black or grey mother-of-pearl, together with jasper, turquoise and hard stones are sculpted with infinite delicacy. The elements, sometimes less than half a millimetre in thickness, are assembled with amazing precision to compose the precious miniature panoramas on which the watch hands run their course.

The delicacy of the work is such that a slight movement of the wrist changes the play of shadow and light on the surface of the watch. The reflections from translucent enamels increase or diminish the shimmering brilliance of the mother-of-pearl. The materials bring life to the piece and thus the Extraordinary Dials become expressions of love, tenderness or admiration.
