  • Patek Philippe Geneva - March 2009

Patek Philippe introduces the casually elegant Nautilus for ladies.

After the extremely successful relaunch of the Nautilus men’s collection in the fall of 2006, the Geneva workshops are finally presenting the new Nautilus ladies’ line. Its new models exhibit the same technical modifications and retouched design elements as the men’s watches, but in a size and with stylistic refinements that add irresistible feminine charm to the innate casual elegance of the Nautilus collection. The new ladies’ Nautilus models are available in white or rose gold with precious diamonds (Ref. 7010/1) or with a satin-finished bezel (Ref. 7011/1). Launched in 1976, the Nautilus became a wildly popular “enfant terrible” in the category of casually elegant watches, setting itself apart with an unconventional porthole-inspired design and a rounded octagonal bezel. Introduced in 1981, the Ref. 3800 midsize model with the 37.5-mm case was soon seen more and more frequently on feminine wrists as well, so a year later, Patek Philippe presented the Ref. 4700, a 28.5-mm version styled explicitly for ladies. Thus, it is only natural that the successful redesign of the men’s Nautilus on the occasion of the collection’s 30-year anniversary in the fall of 2006 is now being followed by a completely new ladies’ Nautilus line. It interprets the technical and stylistic evolution of the prominent men’s watch with feminine aplomb.

    Casual elegance in 18K gold

The new ladies’ Nautilus comes exclusively in 18K white or rose gold. The three-part case, now with a diameter of 32 mm, is one of its new features, offering the same legendary ruggedness as the original monocoque; it is water-resistant to 60 meters. The ingenious porthole mechanism of the Nautilus case that firmly secures the bezel on the caseband remains unchanged. But the previously straight hinges are now gently rounded as in the new men’s Nautilus models, following the curvature of the bezel. This evolution in design and harmony produces a new level of timeless elegance. The bracelet was also refined and reproportioned to complement the latest case formats. It seamlessly extends the contour of the case and gradually tapers into a fold-over clasp that assures a comfortable yet secure fit. Thanks to a new finish, the bracelet now feels even softer. As in the original version, the outer links feature a glowing matt satin finish while the center links are polished to a brilliant sheen.

Feminine luster: with or without diamonds

The new Nautilus ladies’ models in white or rose gold are available in versions with or without diamonds. The bezel of the Ref. 7011/1 without diamonds projects the traditional Nautilus look with a vertical satin finish on the top side and mirror-polished flanks. The same matt/shine contrast is repeated on the case flank, the lugs, and the bracelet. In place of the satin finish, the bezel of the Ref. 7010/1 exhibits a scintillating wreath of 46 flawless Top Wesselton round diamonds totaling about 0.73 ct. They reflect sunshine – or the limelight – with incomparable fire. Whether in silvery white or charcoal gray, the dials are styled to radiate casual elegance. Framed by a discreet minute scale, the center is embossed with the horizontal signature pattern of the Nautilus collection. The periphery is formed by 10 baton hour markers as well as the Arabic numeral 12; all of these 18K gold appliques have a luminescent coating for excellent legibility even in total darkness. Striking signature elements, the new, slightly widened baton-style hour and minute hands were designed expressly for the ladies’ Nautilus. The watch also has a sweep seconds hand and an aperture date at 3 o'clock.

    Casual elegance with quartz precision

Patek Philippe’s new Nautilus for ladies is powered by the caliber E 23 SC quartz movement. This manufacture movement is crafted in the workshops in Geneva; its mechanical parts, such as wheels, arbors, and levers, are made with the same dedication to care lavished on the mechanical movements signed by Patek Philippe. With its gentle redesign, distinctive silhouette in precious yet resilient gold versions, and choice of bezels with a suave satin finish or glistening diamonds, Patek Philippe’s reworked Nautilus for ladies establishes a new norm that will endure for generations. It represents a model of casual elegance and feminine panache that will endure for generations. To accent the launch of the new Nautilus collection for ladies, Patek Philippe also created two finger rings inspired by the design of the Nautilus’ octagonal bezel. One ring is set with 60, the other with 48 flawless Top Wesselton diamonds. Both rings are available in white or rose gold. To underscore their alliance with the collection, they display an engraved “Patek Philippe Nautilus” inscription. The launch of the new ladies’ Nautilus collection begins this spring and will be supported by a worldwide campaign introducing a new ad as part of the ongoing global “Begin an enduring love affair” ladies’ campaign. The new campaign positions the world famous ladies’ Nautilus as the quintessential casually elegant watch for every day. In a visual captured by globally acclaimed fashion photographer Michael Thompson, the ad features a confident, elegant woman on a speeding yacht, a metaphorical reference to water as the realm of the Nautilus.
